We live in a new era of information access, knowledge creation and sharing. We are gradually forgetting the days when one would sit in the library and go through five or more text books to extract information and provide references. The emergence of many new technologies is making all of these tasks easier. Eventually, the use of several AI powered resources will be essential for any student to be able to study and comprehend even the most challenging concepts in any field.

However, the reluctance to fully integrate these tools into our educational frameworks could limit our ability to learn and innovate. While the adoption of AI in education does present ethical and practical challenges that must be addressed, the reality is that these technologies are here to stay. They are becoming more powerful every day and will be essential to how students learn and grow.

It is our moral obligation that we guide students to understand and identify biased outputs, validate the accuracy of the information they access and spot AI hallucinations. By doing this, we can prepare students for life beyond the classroom so that they can make even more positive impacts in their communities.

21st-century skills have transitioned from being merely important to becoming essential. Given that we live in an era that is characterised by uncertainty, it is imperative for students to not only navigate the inevitable changes in their lives but also to influence these changes positively. Failure to develop these competencies risks leaving them behind. The accelerating demands and expectations across all industries further amplifies this necessity. Indeed, the ability to handle and adapt to change is critical since ideas and methods can cause industries to shift drastically overnight. Take the example of the current AI rush that is happening now. AI has emerged as a transformative force across various sectors in numerous economies. Companies are racing to integrate AI into their operations, recognising its potential to enhance efficiency, drive innovation and provide a competitive edge. As such it is revolutionising traditional practices and creating new paradigms of operation in industries such as healthcare, finance, manufacturing and education.
Recognising this need, Partidos has initiated the Glide project. This initiative aims to help students develop these critical skills and ensure they are prepared to meet the demands of the future workforce.
The Glide program is delivered over a three-month period. All students in this program must read a total of 26 books by various renowned authors. These books include Psycho-Cybernetics by Dr. Maxwell Maltz, The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey, Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, Relentless: From Good to Great to Unstoppable by Tim Grover, and Napoleon Hill’s Keys to Success: The 17 Principles of Personal Achievement by Napoleon Hill, among others.
Engaging students in discussions about these selected books plays a pivotal role in shaping them into well-rounded individuals prepared to tackle the challenges of the 21st century. These discussions are designed to stimulate critical thinking, broaden perspectives, and foster essential skills that extend beyond traditional academic knowledge.

Educators are using AI tools to set assessments and students are using AI to write the answers. But rather than welcome this shift, we find ourselves in a contradictory state—criticising the very instruments we covertly depend on. The problem is not that these instruments are intrinsically evil; rather, we lack the necessary rules to properly include them into our educational systems.

Let’s face it: While we debate the ethical implications and practicalities of artificial intelligence (AI) in education, the reality is that it is already deeply embedded in our education systems.
We need to develop comprehensive policies, supporting the development of teacher skills and establish environments whereby artificial intelligence is seen as a tool for instruction rather than a threat. It also entails embracing the responsibility to train our students on how to use tools to support their learning and development. Also, it is important to train the students on how to probe and analyse the information from these AI tools for authenticity so that may extract and apply accurate information with confidence and proficiency.
When you see top tech companies investing in huge infrastructure (Nvidia, Microsoft, Alphabet, Apple, etc.) and changing their product ranges (Microsoft Copilot plus PCs), you know we are moving towards an irreversible technological transformation. Why do we always want to play it safe and then make comments like “my country is 20 years behind”? We have smart and capable people in Africa and we can learn from those who have already made great strides. Let’s not always wait. We need to jump on this bus early enough or be left behind again like we have been before.
