We are gradually forgetting the days when one would sit in the library and go through five or more text books to extract information and provide references. The emergence of many new technologies is making all of these tasks easier. Eventually, the use
21st-century skills have transitioned from being merely important to becoming essential. Given that we live in an era that is characterised by uncertainty, it is imperative for students to not only navigate the inevitable changes in their lives but also to influence these changes positively. Failure to develop these competencies risks leaving them behind.
Let’s face it: While we debate the ethical implications and practicalities of artificial intelligence (AI) in education, the reality is that it is already deeply embedded in our education systems. Educators are using AI tools to set assessments and students are using AI to write the answers. But rather than welcome this shift, we find ourselves in a contradictory state—criticising the very instruments we covertly depend on. The problem is not that these instruments are intrinsically evil; rather, we lack the necessary rules to properly include them into our educational systems.
